A police officer was confronted by a man wielding two kitchen knives after being called out to an incident in Buckie.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that the officer deployed his Pava spray to try and subdue the man who was shouting incoherently and waving the knives about at head height.

However, fiscal depute David Morton stated that the spray was initially ineffective.

It was not until several other officers arrived to assist their colleague that the man ran away.

Mr Morton added: "He was traced a short distance away lying in a nearby garden and the knives were recovered."

The incident unfolded in the early hours of August 8 last year in Milton Drive.

A member of the public had earlier alerted the police that a man holding a kitchen knife in each hand was walking up and down the street randomly.

The 31-year-old defendant appeared at court today.

He admitted possessing the knives in a public place without reasonable excuse.

He also pleaded guilty to attempting to strike a police officer.

Defence solicitor Ben Thom suggested a report should be called for into the defendant's background.

Sheriff Margaret Neilson agreed and the case will come to court again on April 28.
