Aberdeenshire East MSP Gillian Martin visited the Garioch Indoor Bowling Club this week to present Jason Banks with a copy of a parliamentary motion she lodged to congratulate him for making it to the final of the World Indoor Bowls Championship (IIBC).

In the parliamentary motion Ms Martin highlighted that at the world championship in January Jason recorded a new best result, and that it was the first time where a open/men's singles final featured two unseeded players since seeds were introduced in 1988.

The motion also recognised Jason’s achievements throughout what has been a tremendously successful bowls career thus far, including but not limited to: winning the junior singles title at the IIBC Championship in 2019, and winning three medals at the European Bowls Championships in 2017.

As Ms Martin visited, Garioch Indoor Bowling Club was hosting a competition which saw over 200 participants involved in short mat bowling, with 18 communities from throughout the north-east participating, along with others from as far as Gretna and Skye.

Before presenting the motion to Jason Banks, Gillian Martin MSP was kindly welcomed by President of Garioch Indoor Bowling Club, Derek MacKay, as well as the Club’s Secretary John McQuillan.

Jason is currently participating in the Gents International Bowls Championship in Fife from 16-18 March. This will be his 19th cap for Scotland.

Jason Banks commented: "I was honoured that MSP Gillian Martin tabled a parliamentary motion at the Scottish Parliament recognising my achievement in reaching the final of the World Indoor Bowls Championship in January.”

Gillian Martin MSP said: “I was delighted to submit a motion congratulating Jason Banks - his excellent performance at the World Indoor Bowls Championship was more than worthy of a parliamentary motion, and I was even more delighted for the opportunity to present the motion to Jason at the Garioch Indoor Bowling Club. I wish him the best of luck in all of his upcoming competitions this year, and beyond.
