A thought-provoking open day was staged by FROM Scotland (Famine Relief for Orphans in Malawi) at the Chapel of Garioch memorial hall near Inverurie on Saturday.

Illustrated information boards told the stories of just some of the many helpful life-changing projects FROM Scotland has undertaken.

There were humbling details such as how £20 feeds an orphan for a year, £5 buys a family mosquito net and £1.50 supplies a water purification unit for a family hut for a year.

Hospital beds, bedding, wheelchairs, zimmers, crutches, even bicycles ambulances have been supplied by the NHS.

There were touching photos of FROM Scotland patron singer Fiona Kennedy on a most rewarding visit to Malawi to see the progress of some of the many projects FROM Scotland has undertaken.

Especially well-received were the football strips donated by Inverurie Locos and there were heart-warming pictures of joyful wee children receiving their first ever toys.

With a population of over 18 million, life expectancy in 2005 was 47 years and efforts have now increased this to 64 years.
