Grampian Kart Club will celebrate 60 years of racing at Boyndie Drome with an open day event.

Past and present club members are invited to mark the occasion, which will be held at the circuit on Sunday, August 21.

The club was formed in 1962 under the name of Banff and Moray Kart Club.

That year there was a demonstration of karting at the circuit and the first races were held in 1963.

A club spokesman said: "The first chairman was James Hendry, who is 94, and he is keen to visit the track to celebrate the occasion.

"The club has had highs and lows over the years but has survived with good people in the north-east involved.

"In the 1980s the name changed to Grampian Kart Club. This was to reflect the regionalisation of the council areas.

"There must be thousands of past members in the north-east of Scotland and they are invited to visit our modern facilities during the open day.

"We are also always on the lookout for old photos of the Boyndie Drome circuit and the drivers."

Grampian Kart Club hosted the Scottish Karting Championships in July, which saw 92 drivers take part.

This weekend sees the return of the Boyndie Drome Open challenge, which is into round four. Managed practice will take place on Saturday and the racing will be held on Sunday.
