ONE more person has died in Moray due to coronavirus, taking the total deaths in the area to 14.

Figures, released today by the National Records of Scotland, show a Moray resident died in hospital between May 18 and May 24.

Eight Moray residents have now died of coronavirus in hospital, four at home and two in care homes.

A total of 18 deaths were recorded by NHS Grampian across the same period, taking the health board's death total to 231 since the outbreak began. The two weeks prior saw 28 and 30 deaths recorded respectively.

For the second successive day, there were no new recorded cases of coronavirus in Moray – with the number of confirmed cases remaining 77.

NHS Grampian recorded six new cases of the virus overnight, taking its total to 1256.

Neighbouring Aberdeenshire (pop: 261,500) has seen 110 deaths from 424 confirmed cases of covid-19. That is three new deaths and four new cases since last Wednesday.

Aberdeen City (pop: 227,500) has seen 107 deaths from 742 cases. That is 14 new deaths and 32 new confirmed cases since last Wendesday.

Highland has 195 positive cases and 46 deaths (population 235,500) – which is an increase of two deaths and two cases from last week's update.

Across Scotland, 3779 people have died due to coronavirus, according to NRS figures. That includes all deaths where coronavirus was mentioned on the death certificate, even if they person hadn't tested positive for covid-19.

Of those, 233 died between May 18 and May 24. That is down on 332 deaths the week prior, 415 between May 4 and May 10, 523 between April 27 and May 3 and 658 between April 20 and April 26.

124 of this week's deaths (54 per cent) occurred in care homes. 76 per cent of those who have died since the outbreak began have been aged 75 or older, with 50 per cent male and 50 per cent female.

Pete Whitehouse, director of statistical services for NRS, said: “Every death from this virus is a tragedy.

"These statistics, alongside the other important evidence being made available by the Scottish Government and Health Protection Scotland (HPS), are valuable to the understanding of the progress and impact of the covid-19 virus across Scotland.

"These latest figures show that for the fourth week running there has been a reduction in covid-19 related deaths.

"Our aim is to ensure that our statistical publication provides information that is as useful as possible and adds value to the understanding of how the virus is spreading throughout the country. We will continue to review and develop these statistics as new information is made available."

The Scottish Government's daily update showed a total of 2304 people have died within 28 days of testing positive for coronavirus. 106,984 people in Scotland have been tested through NHS labs, with 91,744 negative tests and 15,240 positive. A total of 3611 have been discharged from hospital after testing positive.
