North-east cancer charity strengthens team

Cancer support charity Maggie’s Aberdeen has boosted its team with a series of new appointments.

The three new starts across the cancer support and fundraising teams come as the charity responds to increasing demand for support and gears up for a busy winter period of fundraising, with plans for the return of its popular art extravaganza and Christmas carol concert in the process of being finalised.

As well as celebrating the appointment of the new team members, the centre, which is based within the grounds of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, is also marking its ninth birthday this week.

Among the new appointments is Annah Cargill, who has joined as cancer support specialist. Formerly a therapeutic radiographer at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Annah brings valuable experience to the team that will stand her in good stead in her new role.

She said: “Coming from a radiotherapy background means I bring insight to a specialist section of the treatment pathway which can be used to better support centre visitors.

“A cancer diagnosis can bring so many chaotic emotions for the person themselves and their families and friends. I like to try to cultivate moments of calmness, to allow time and space for open and honest conversations so that everyone feels heard and supported.”

Elsewhere, Ryan Wilson has been appointed centre fundraiser, with Libby Stainer also joining the team as centre fundraising organiser, with the duo’s first event being the first firewalk last week, which saw 25 people walk across hot coals, raising nearly £10,000.

Maggie’s Aberdeen centre fundraising manager Richard Stewart said: “I’m delighted to have bolstered the team with the appointments of Ryan and Libby.

"It’s a testing time financially for everyone, particularly charities, and I am sure they will play a key role in helping us raise the funds needed to ensure we can continue offering the highest quality of support to people who have been diagnosed with cancer and their families.”

Libby said: “For many people living in the north-east, Maggie’s Aberdeen is a beacon of hope. We have a first-class reputation for providing the very best cancer support and I am looking forward to being a part of such a wonderful team.

“We understand that the cost-of-living crisis is having a huge and growing impact on everyone in our community. We rely almost entirely on public donations to operate and our support is more urgent now than ever.
