The Bothy Ballads which were to be staged in Elgin Town Hall on February 6 next year have been cancelled.

The event, a unique part of the North East's cultural heritage, traditionally pulls in record crowds from across the country.

Winners from heats held over the summer and autumn would usually take to the Elgin town hall stage for the Champion of Champions event, which is sponsored by The Macallan.

However, Rotary Elgin has had to cancel what would have been its 39th consecutive year at the venue as no heats can be staged due to the ongoing pandemic.

The organisers are now in contact with the Elphinstone Institute in Aberdeen which has recordings of previous events.

A rotary spokesperson said: "It is hoped that a programme might be collated for a virtual broadcast that may also be available on a DVD.

"Information on this will be widely circulated once progress is confirmed."
