A creative writing group based in Ellon is on the lookout for new members.

The Ythan Writers collective is dedicated to the promotion and enjoyment of writing.

It has existed for over a decade and is a grassroots group for amateur writers of any ability.

It meets on Wednesdays from 2.30pm to 4.30pm at the town's Station Hotel.

Di Hay from the group said: "The sessions are relaxed, sociable, humorous and structured.

"We begin with tea and cake and a wee catch-up blether before sharing our latest writing efforts with the group – if we choose to.

"If we aren’t comfortable with reading aloud, we get another writer to read for us.

"The readings are followed by a frantic 20-minute task on any subject matter nominated. This is challenging fun and the outcomes can lead to tears of hilarity, despair or frustration."

The sessions conclude with suggestions for homework. The chosen topic is provided as a stimulus but it is never compulsory to do.

Di added: "If the writing bug abandons us and we find we are unable to write we continue to attend and enjoy the weekly get-togethers. These offer more than just a time and place for writing.

"They connect us with others in the north-east community, and beyond, who share a common interest and fosters social friendships.

"One member lives half the year in Spain. We email the homework to him and he sends his writing for us to share in his absence. Inclusiveness is valued and prioritised.

"The activities of the collective have helped us develop our creative writing skills and confidence within a mutually supportive framework.

"We believe creative writing has also improved our everyday reading, storytelling and our writing in other contexts such as diaries, personal journals, letters, form-filling and course studies."

All adults with an interest in creative writing of any genre are welcome to join the weekly gatherings.
