As per normal process, the Aberdeenshire Council leader role is decided at full council. The next meeting is on Thursday, June 26.

He replaces former leader, Ellon and District councillor Gillian Owen following a period of unrest in the group.

The council is run as a Conservative, Liberal Democrats and independent coalition.

A Scottish Conservative spokesperson said: “We thank Gillian for her dedication and hard work during her time as Aberdeenshire Conservative group leader.

“Under Stewart’s leadership, we will continue to focus on the priorities that matter to the people of Aberdeenshire.”

Last week, Ms Martin confirmed in writing to the group that she would not seek nomination for another term as group leader ahead of the AGM.

The AGM involves only councillors in the Aberdeenshire Conservative group.
