A proposal to bring an historic former general store and emporium building back into use have been approved despite concerns being raised over road safety.

Morrison Campbell Estates applied to Aberdeenshire Council for permission to change the use of the former Bridge of Alford Stores and Post Office buildings into a multi-purpose community facility.

The application was considered by the Marr Area Committee at its most recent meeting which was held this week.

Several local residents raised concerns regarding noise, anti-social behaviour and road safety and Donside Community Council also objected to the plan over potential road safety risks.

A further objection was received by the Tullynessle and Forbes Community Hall and Association regarding what they cited as “under used” community facilities in the area, of which there were, in their opinion, a prevalence.

Aberdeenshire Council planners stated that they recommended the plans be approved.

Signs warning drivers of pedestrians in the area are to be installed following a request by councillor Robbie Withey.

Committee chairman councillor John Latham welcomed the proposal saying it was “of great need in the area”.

Councillor Withey added that he was very supportive of the plan as it will bring the building back in use.

Fellow councillor Peter Argyle said it was “fabulous” to see the renovated building after it had been derelict for so many years.

He also noted that the improvements to the road junction would make a significant difference for people crossing to and from the hotel and for other road users.

The store was built and run by the Sheriff family for several generations up to the 1960s but the building has lain derelict for many years.

Following approval the building will now be converted into a community space suitable to host various activities, events and meetings while the facility will also be used as function space by the Forbes Arms Hotel.
