Local charity North East Sensory Services (NESS) has been supporting a very special young musician over a number of months and now through lockdown.

Originally from Poland and now living in Aberdeen, Matt Sobon is 28 years old and totally blind.

He has been unable to see since the age of 12 years old and is grateful to NESS for providing long cane training to enable him to attend college to learn and follow his dream to eventually become an engineer; however his college study has been ceased since the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown and Matt can no longer make music with his Heavy Metal band.

You can see how we is spending his time instead on his Youtube channel.

From his room in lockdown, Matt has begun making his own music to reach out and use social media online to stay connected.

He’s started his own YouTube and Instagram channels.

Thanks to training and support provided by NESS, before lockdown Matt was travelling independently by bus using the long cane, but while lockdown remains in place this talented musical artist will continue to use his music to stay busy and connected.

North East Sensory Services (NESS) is celebrating an amazing 140 years of improving lives.

NESS is a local charity operating with the main aim of achieving independence for Blind and Deaf people.

It is the first integrated joint sensory service in Scotland and delivers much needed information, equipment and support.

Everyone who experiences sight loss and hearing loss is affected in different ways, and may need different support at different times.

Getting the right practical and emotional support helps make sense of their sight and/or hearing loss and find ways of managing day-to-day life whilst maintaining their independence, and Matt credits NESS with giving him the confidence and the ability to make journeys on his own not just to college, but also to the shops and bank without depending on others to take him.

NESS would not be able to do everything that it does without the support and generosity of their supporters, the businesses that NESS works with and the dedication of their team of volunteers.
