MP David Duguid has welcomed the proposed expansion of the Warm Home Discount scheme which would provide increased rebates to thousands of additional families across the north-east.

The uplift would mean rebates are provided to an additional 50,000 families in Scotland each year on top of the 230,000 that already receive payments and boost cash paid out to help meet energy costs from £140 to £150.

The MP for Banff and Buchan, Mr Duguid said the rebates will provide much needed support to those across the north-east who find themselves struggling to heat their homes.

A consultation has been launched into the scheme’s proposed extension which would see support in Scotland grow by around £13,000,000 to £49,000,000 per year.

MP David Duguid said: “Global price increases have led to residents across the north-east feeling a squeeze on their household costs, so this support from the UK Government is timely.

“The extension of the scheme to 2026 with rebates of £150 will help to address the worrying rise of fuel costs across our region.

“I appreciate that this is a concerning time for families and businesses and the UK Government is committed to doing what it can to provide them with security and peace of mind.

“UK Government measures such as this, along with increases in national living wage and reduction of universal credit taper rates, mean more working families will be able to keep more of what they earn - particularly those on lower incomes.”
