Concerns have been raised after it emerged pre-booking signage is being kept up at an Aberdeenshire recycling centre on days when it should be fully open without the need for an appointment.

Banff and Buchan MP David Duguid has written to Aberdeenshire Council over fears that residents are being put off from using Turriff Recycling Centre due to the wrong signage being in place.

It comes as signs showing booking is still required are being kept up on Wednesdays and Saturdays despite these being days where an appointment is not required.

Recycling centres in Formartine, including Turriff, were put onto a hybrid booking system in October which only allowed non-booking days each Wednesday and Saturday.

Mr Duguid, who has campaigned for the booking system to be scrapped in areas like Turriff, also questioned the council on what criteria will be used to assess the success or failure of the hybrid system.

He is concerned that the wrong signage being in place could impact the results of the trial.

The MP said: “It’s extremely disappointing that confusing signs are being kept up which say booking is still required on days where they should be taken down.

“We should be trying to get more people to recycle yet the council is putting barriers in the way which is stopping people from doing this.

“I have written to the council with concerns about a range of issues which residents are experiencing while trying to use the recycling centres.

“Staff need to be told about these changes and these errors must be addressed otherwise any results from this hybrid trial may be skewed.

“The longer these problems persist, the more likely it is for fly-tipping to increase and our countryside to be needlessly damaged across Aberdeenshire.”
