Gordon MP Richard Thomson has joined MPs and Members of the House of Lords from across the political spectrum to sign a letter on behalf of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Ending Homelessness urging the UK Government to take action on the worrying rise in homelessness amongst Ukrainian refugees living in the UK.

Last month, the APPG held a meeting to discuss the issue as the first anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine approached which, with more than 7 million refugees recorded to date amounts to the biggest humanitarian crisis Europe has seen since World War II.

The letter, to Housing Minister Felicity Buchan, has been signed by MPs from the SNP, Plaid Cymru, DUP, Labour, Liberal Democrats and Conservative parties, and Lords from the Green Party, Plaid Cymru, Labour and Conservative parties.

Mr Thomson said: “In the midst of a cost of living crisis, there are growing concerns that increasing numbers of Ukrainian arrivals are facing homelessness or destitution.

"The response from both the Scottish and UK Governments last year is clearly welcome, as indeed are the efforts of a great many individuals who are playing a part in supporting people fleeing from the horrors of war.

“However, the Homes for Ukraine Scheme should be reviewed to ensure it remains fit for purpose. The UK Government also needs to fill the gap left in recent ministerial changes by appointing a Minister for Refugees once again.

"This would send a strong signal about the UK Government’s approach to improving conditions for refugees.”
