MP Richard Thomson challenges ministers on assistance for those reliant on domestic heating oil

Gordon MP Richard Thomson has challenged Ministers in the House of Commons on what support is being made available to those in rural areas reliant on domestic heating oil to heat their homes in light of the cost-of-living crisis.

Speaking after the exchange with UK Government Ministers, MP Richard Thomson said: “On behalf of my constituents, I asked what was being done to assist those who rely on domestic heating oil for their energy needs, which has seen prices spike from £250 for 500 litres to anywhere between £600-£900.

"In response, I was urged to wait for the Chancellor of the Exchequer's Spring Statement.

“So I did.

"And unfortunately the blunt truth is that if you were already struggling to pay your energy bills, there's nothing from this statement to change that for you.

"While the zero percent VAT rate on solar panels and heat pumps is welcome, if people can’t pay their bills to begin with how on earth does the Chancellor expect them to pay for solar panels?

“Decisive action was needed - on the cost of living, it seems this Conservative government cares little and does even less.”
