AN MSP has today called for more women to be helped to start their own businesses.

Jamie Halcro Johnson was speaking during a Scottish Parliament debate on the Economy Committee’s Business Support Report

Mr Halcro Johnston, whose Highlands constituency includes Moray, said: "Our economy will not reach its maximum potential until more women are supported to start their own companies.

"Women’s Enterprise Scotland recently published research which showed that the economy would add an extra £13 billion if the number of female-led businesses matched those of men.

"This is a huge opportunity and I am urging the Government to do more to support female entrepreneurs.

"There are some great examples of businesses led by women across the Highlands and Islands but we would all greatly benefit if there were more of them, and our business support network should be there to help.

"That is a challenge to the Scottish Government, and to all the agencies involved in supporting businesses, to step up to the mark."
