Moray Council might seek to save 12 out of 13 phone boxes under threat from BT.

The local authority is set to discuss the issue at its meeting on Monday.

It will then email the telecoms company with its views by the end of the month.

Council officers are recommending that no objections be raised with BT about getting rid of the phone box on the corner of Califer Road and Pilmuir Road in Forres.

This is because there's another within half a mile on the High Street.

However, Moray Council could well object to the closure of six others for a variety of reasons.

The phone boxes in Reidhaven Square in Keith and Harbour Street, Hopeman, were both used more than a dozen times last year and there are no others nearby.

Meanwhile, the one at Victoria Street, Craigellachie, is near an accident black spot.

Auchenhalrig and The Square in Tomintoul have poor mobile reception, while Chapelton near Tomintoul has none.

Local communities across Moray are seeking to take over the remaining six of the 13 phone boxes under threat.

Two may be adopted by the Cabrach community association.

The first at the Bridgend Cottages in Lower Cabrach would be turned into a mini library and tourist information kiosk, while the other at the post office would house a defibrillator.

The Glenlivet and Inveravon community association is prepared to adopt those at Auchnarrow, Tomnavoulin and Glenlivet.

Finally, the Kirkmichael Hall organisation would put a defibrillator in the phone box at Ballcorach, near Tomintoul.
