Local residents have raised concerns about the Auld Brig and the need for urgent maintenance.

The local landmark, which was built in 1609, is owned by Diageo as it sits within the grounds of their Strathmill Distillery.

Mr Lochhead has been in touch with Diageo and has been assured that a survey has been carried out and that repairs will be progressed.

The Keith Auld Brig has a storied history. The local landmark was built in 1609, making it the oldest surviving dated bridge in Moray.

According to a placard on the bridge, Thomas Moray and his wife Janet Lindsay built the structure in memory of their son who died crossing the ford.

The bridge has been in constant use since then and has featured in important historical events, according to records Campbell’s Hole - under the bridge - was an alleged place of refuge for Campbell soldiers retreating from battle with the Jacobites in 1706.

The Auld Brig underwent repairs in 1724, and again in 1822 before being designated a Category A listed building in 1988.

Moray’s MSP has sought regular updates from Diageo on plans for work to be carried out and is urging the company to ensure repairs and maintenance are carried out as quickly as possible.

Mr Lochhead said: “The Auld Brig is an important local landmark in Keith and has plays a big part in the town’s history. Understandably, residents and community groups are keen to ensure that it is looked after and properly maintained.

“In recent weeks I’ve been contacted by constituents who have expressed concern at the current condition of the bridge and they asked that I make representations to ensure repairs are carried out as soon as possible.

“With the bridge being over 400 years old it is important that Diageo ensure it is cared for and preserved for many more years to come. I’m grateful to Diageo for their correspondence on this issue so far and the company has confirmed that following a survey of the bridge, maintenance and repairs will be progressed.

“I hope that in light of concerns within the community that these works will be expedited and the bridge returned to good condition as soon as possible.”
