THE community spirit that has come shining through amid the coronavirus pandemic, has been praised by the senior councillors at the helm of Moray Council.

Convener Cllr Shona Morrison and Leader Cllr Graham Leadbitter say they are proud of the way people have reacted to the crisis.

Cllr Morrison said: “There has been amazing support from people in all of our communities, with support groups being put together by local volunteers, charities working hard to ensure the most vulnerable are supported, shops and businesses providing support despite the pressures that they are under and much, much more.

“The number of people who have signed up to help local groups, regional and national efforts is quite incredible and I am very proud of the way that people have stepped up at a time of crisis.”

And Cllr Leadbitter added: “Folk right across Moray are doing some amazing things, whether it is providing moral support to our hard pressed health and care workers, collecting essentials like food and prescriptions for folk who are stuck at home, supporting charities, providing entertainment like online quizzes and exercise routines, supporting home learning or simply by being a friendly voice on the end of the phone or on a video call."

Cllr Leadbitter himself has taken to social media to play Scottish accordion tunes for people.

“There are so many ways that people are supporting each other through this international crisis and it is great to see the best side of our society," he said.

"Most of us are used to having very hectic lives and an emergency like this has really made us stop and think about what is important.

"Family, friends and community are right in the forefront of people’s mind and the support people are providing through simple acts of kindness, volunteering and supporting public services is absolutely brilliant.”
