Banff man who drove work’s van drunk is banned from roads
A man who was drink-driving his work’s van to get supermarket shopping and subsequently lost his job has been banned from the roads.
Leeandrew McLeod (32) appeared at Banff Sheriff Court after getting caught by police.
McLeod, of St Catherine Street, Banff, pleaded guilty to drink-driving at Aldi in Macduff, at his home address and elsewhere. He also admitted driving the van with no insurance.
He had 65 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of his breath which exceeded the limit of 22mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.
Fiscal depute Anne Mann told the court that McLeod was driving his employer’s van.
Police received an anonymous call and attended and found McLeod in the driver’s seat and a woman in the passenger’s seat.
Ms Mann said McLeod failed a roadside breath test and was taken to the police station where he gave the readings outlined in the charge.
McLeod’s solicitor Leonard Burkinshaw said his client was only insured for the van for work purposes.
He added: “He had been drinking and it was wife who was the passenger and she suggested going to Aldi for shopping.
“He stupidly drove the van and it was a double blow for him as he was arrested and also lost his job.”
Sheriff Robert McDonald disqualified McLeod from driving for 12 months. If he completes the drink-drive rehabilitation course it will be reduced to nine months. He was also fined £420.
