A NORTHUMBERLAND maltings company is expanding its operations into Speyside.

Family-owned Simpsons Malt, the UK's largest independent maltster, has entered into an agreement to buy 40 acres of land near Rothes.

The company hopes to build a state-of-the-art maltings with malting barley storage facilities, subject to planning and due diligence.

The construction of a Rothes maltings would expand the company’s number of sites to three, with its other maltings in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland – where its headquarters is located – and Tivetshall St Margaret, Norfolk.

The company says many Speyside distillers use its malts in their whiskies.
