Retired Fochabers doctor honoured by Scottish Liberal Democrats for decades of dedicated service
A former doctor and Moray local has won a national award for long standing service volunteering for his political party
Born in Hamilton, Dr Donald Cameron (93) moved to Moray from Dornoch in the Highlands and was the District Medical Officer in Moray at Dr Gray's Hospital until retiring.
He currently lives in Fochabers with his wife Jennifer and is a fellow of the Glasgow Royal College of Physicians.
Donald joined the then Liberal Party in 1974 and fondly remembers national Highland leaders such as Charles Kennedy, who he used to regularly take to meetings of the reformed Liberal Democrats during his leadership
He held numerous committee roles including a long stint as convener of the local Moray Lib Dems for 23 years from 1995 until 2018, and campaigned for numerous winning candidates such as helping to get Malcolm Bruce elected as an MP in Gordon between 1983 and 2015
The Scottish Liberal Democrats awarded Donald with their long-standing service award at their recent national conference
The award was formally presented to Donald at a recent visit to Moray by Scottish Lib Dem leader Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP along with Moray Lib Dem leader Neil Alexander
Mr Cole-Hamilton said: "Donald Cameron has kept the liberal flame burning in Moray through good and bad times, and we as a party owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude
"It was an honour to present him with this award, and to thank him personally for his services to the party."
Mr Alexander added: "Taking over the local party in Moray has been a massive challenge for me, but to be able to rely on Donald's words of wisdom and support over the past few years has been invaluable.
"He has been a rock of support for me personally and has done a lot to keep the Lib Dems alive in Moray, and for that we are all so grateful for all of his efforts. This award is well and truly deserved"
