THE Loft Youth Project in Keith is one step closer to opening their new 'living loft' after help from the local Tesco supermarket.

The upstairs section above The Loft's main living hall had become little more than a storage room throughout the pandemic and had been scarcely used.

However, after debating what to do with the flat, it was decided that it would be renovated and turned into a 'living loft' project where young people can learn vital life skills.

The flat's renovation has edged closer to completion after Tesco in Keith donated paint, while staff members volunteered their own time to use the paint to redo the walls of the flat.

Sharon Duncan, The Loft Project Manager, said Tesco Keith offered the support after a passing conversation with Community Champion Fiona Addison last year.

Sharon said: "I was just having a casual chat with Fiona about it and then she said that it sounded like the type of project they could help out with.

"I keep in touch with Fiona because she is always doing things for the community.

"She offered to come and do the painting for the flat.

"They really don't get the recognition they deserve in the community."

Fiona added: "I just thought it would be a brilliant project for us to get involved in.

"I put an invitation out for staff to come and help out as well as an appeal for more donations of paint because we wanted to add some colour as well.

"The kids helped out as well so that was great.

"It's been a joy working with them on this project."

Once complete, the project will teach young people between the ages of 16 and 19 vital life skills.

That will include teaching them to cook in the flat's new home kitchen, cleaning the kitchen, budgeting for food and budgeting bills. They will also be given the responsibility of looking after the flat and keeping it in order.

Fiona said: "It took a wee while to get going but when I approached the store manager and he visited the flat he was well on board.

"It's been great to back the community with a big one."

Sharon added: "It's been great seeing Tesco working with us and young people in such a positive light.

"It's progressed so well and we can't wait until it's completely finished."
