Aberdeenshire’s Summer Reading Challenge is in its fourth week and over a thousand individuals have already signed up.

A year's supply of ice-cream is up for grabs in the Summer Reading Challenge.

It has been organised by Live Life Aberdeenshire to encourage children, young people and families to read and get active during the summer holidays.

This year it has a focus on bringing families on staycation together over a good read.

There are so many ways to take part once readers have signed up: they can borrow eBooks and eAudiobooks from the Digital Library and you can read, listen or share books with the family too.

Those taking part will also have access to a wide range of activities and challenges linked to themes released every fortnight on the Live Life @ Home web portal.

Once an activity is achieved, participants can award themselves a tick on their ‘Staycation’ passport.

When six or more have been completed they can submit their passport for entry into a prize draw.

On Monday, July 20, the Big Read Picnic theme of the Summer Reading Challenge will launch, and the star prize will be revealed.

One lucky passport entry will scoop up two litres of award-winning homemade ice cream every month for a year, courtesy of Portsoy Ice Cream.

Live Life Aberdeenshire’s Sport and Culture Sub-Committee chairman David Cook said: “Whilst many of us won’t be able to escape to a sun kissed beach this summer, young people and families are escaping into a world of imagination and pleasure through signing up to participate in the Summer Reading Challenge, so it is great to see so many people have already agreed to take part.

"Best of luck to all those who have decided to join in this year.”

Sub-Committee vice chair councillor Anne Simpson added: “I am pleased to see an Aberdeenshire business is supporting the Summer Reading Challenge by offering a fantastic prize.

"I am sure the winner will enjoy the award-winning ice cream! I would like to pass on my best wishes to everyone who has signed up to take part in this year’s challenge.”

Alex Murray owner of Portsoy Ice Cream said: “We’re very happy to be part of the Summer Reading Challenge, which is a very worthwhile project.”
