Inverurie Probus members heard from speaker Joe McDougall at their latest meeting, who rather surprisingly likened Inverurie to Juneau in Alaska, and Yaroslovi in Russia, on a world map.

As member Mike Barron explained: "The reason was that all three were around 57/58 degrees north of the Equator.

"Juneau was the land locked capital of its US State while Yaroslovi, on the Volvo River in Russia had extreme temperatures.

"He used the map of 1867 of Inverurey (before the name changed to Inverurie), and outlined the development of the Capital of the Garioch to the present day."

His main thesis was based on “Where we are? And how did we get there?” and he emphasised his talk was a personal picture of the future.

While he commented “he was giving a complicated talk in a simple presentation”.

He gave many insights into the present atmosphere containing Nitrogen 78 per cent, Oxygen 21 per cent, Argon 0.9 per cent while Carbon Dioxide had grown from 0.01 per cent to 0.04 per cent.

It was this extreme Carbon Dioxide growth, in statistics, while looking small, was causing great concern with extreme climate changes, and was getting worse.

He touched on many aspects of the universe including detail on the birth of Stars, their changes and how they came into existence.

Following his 45 minute presentation members questions showed members great interest, and Joe was thanked for his educational yet humorous presentation on a very technical subject.
