An Inverurie couple have celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary.

Margaret and Hector Steele, who live at George Square, marked the milestone with family and friends.

And there was double cause for celebration with Mrs Steele, whose maiden name is Reid, also celebrating her 90th birthday.

Mrs Steele was born and bred at a farm near Daviot, while Mr Steele (93) has lived all his life in the Aberdeenshire town.

Mrs Steele said: "We met at the local youth club, Hector was in the band and I was in the choir. We hit it off and we later got engaged.

"We were married at St Andrew's Parish Church on March 29, 1952, and our reception was held at the Kintore Arms. It was a marvellous day."

Mrs Steele worked at the town's former knitting factory before having the couple's two children – Eric and Carolyn.

She returned to work in retail, was a home help and finished her career as a domestic supervisor at the town's hospital.

Mr Steele worked as joiner for the railway before moving to the Grampian construction department of the council.

The couple also have five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and their beloved dog Maddi.

They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary and Mrs Steele's 90th birthday with close family during a meal at Inverurie Golf Club.

Mrs Steele added: "The only disappointment was that my French friend Janine Delias was not able to get over for the celebrations.

"We started writing to each other when we were 13 and we are still friends to this day. She was one of my bridesmaids along with Sheila Scott.

"We have received so many well-wishes, including a card from The Queen, and everybody has been so good to us. We have had a very happy marriage."
