Inverurie chip shop backs Scotland in Euro 2020 with blue and white fish suppers

An Inverurie fish and chips shop has got behind Scotland's Euro 2020 campaign by creating a Saltire version of the classic takeaway meal.

Garioch Fish Bar has launched its unique blue and white haddock suppers as football fever takes hold for the competition over the next month.

For owner Murray Morrison he wanted to mark Scotland's involvement in a major tournament for 23 years.

He said: "I was in Paris in 1998 when Scotland were last in the World Cup and it was such a great experience.

"The atmosphere was buzzing there and at home with people getting together to watch the games.

"I've been to a lot of Scotland matches but it has been a shame we haven't been to a major tournament in such a long time.

"The younger generation like my son Glen, who works in the shop, have yet to experience what it was like.

"So it was great to see the team qualify for the Euro 2020 competition.

"I thought it would be a good idea to do something different in the shop so we have created the blue and white Saltire haddock suppers.

"The idea stemmed from a surprise we organised for a regular customer of ours, Gary Morrison. He is a big Rangers fan so one night we turned his chicken fillets blue by using food colouring.

"We thought this would be good to do with our fish suppers during the football."

They are created by putting blue food colouring into the batter, which does not affect the taste, and the Saltire is finished off with tartare sauce.

They will be sold in the Burghmuir Drive shop until Scotland are knocked out of the competition.

Murray added: "Hopefully Scotland have success in the Euros and we will be selling in the shop for a long time."

Earlier this year the shop provided 468 free meals for children over two Fridays to help families who were struggling during the pandemic.

Also included with some of the suppers was a book from local author George Jack, whose daughter Melissa works in the shop, which is called Robot in my Basement.

Mr Morrison was also supported by his suppliers who provided the food for either a reduced price or free.
