Having been closed since Christmas, it was a welcome sight on the high street that was replicated across towns and villages as businesses opened to trade for the first time in four months.

Along with retailers, charity shops also opened up, including the new TLC premises in the former bank, Turra Market which opened at the old mart building and the Red Cross.

Manager of the Red Cross shop Emma Dow said: “Its fantastic to have our doors open again after what seems like forever.

“We’ve already been busy with people coming and both looking for items and looking to make donations.”

At TLC’s store which opened for the first time, manageress Frances Sharp said: “Lots of people have come in to see us now that we are final open and we look forward to seeing everyone.”

Hospitality also saw the first tentative steps of recovery with limited openings now in place at local premises, which await the next stage of lockdown easing which will take place in mid-May.

In Ellon there was mutual delight between staff and customers, with many of the town centre's independent businesses re-opening.

While the wet weather meant a slow start, enthusiastic staff in many shops reported a strong turn out of keen customers once things dried up.

Cafe staff were also kept busy as people took advantage of being able to pop in for a cuppa and a fine piece with friends and loved ones for the first time this year.

As well as the shops, Ellon Castle Gardens will also now open on Saturdays and Sundays.

The rainy conditions did not deter shoppers in Inverurie who returned to the local businesses after months of lockdown.

Shops including Booth's Scotland, Attic clothing, Novello Gifts and WM Bruce shoes all reopened following the easing of restrictions.

All have safety measures in place including the wearing of face masks, hand sanitiser and social distancing.

WM Bruce owner Steven Bruce said: "It is great to see the customers back and there is a real buzz about the town.

"This past year has been tough but hopefully this is the start of a good summer ahead."

Pubs were also able to welcome back customers including Edward's Bar and Eatery at West High Street.

Activities such as kickboxing can resume with Nemesis hosting is first sessions in its new venue at 8 High Street.

Children's activity centre Play Town can also restart its sessions for youngsters.

Owner Fiona Clegg said: "It is brilliant to get back and see all our regulars again.

"It has been a difficult period but we have very supportive customers and it is great they can return."
