Buckie High students’ cash boost for Macmillan Cancer support

Two high school students have helped hand a three-figure cash boost to a cancer charity.

Buckie Community High School (BCHS) leadership students Carla Flett and Katy Cameron encouraged the whole school to support their fundraising efforts for Macmillan Cancer Support, raising £510.80 in the process.

Carla said: “As part of the leadership class, we have to organise and run an event we decided to raise money for a charity.

“Myself and Katy decided we wanted to raise money for cancer support so we chose on Macmillan Charity.

”We organised to set up and run a bake sale. To do this we needed to get the whole school involved; we asked teachers, students, family and friends to participate by asking them to bake for us.

“Once we had enough people to bake, we started to put up posters around the school to advertise the bake sale. We also got into contact with Macmillan who kindly sent us some decorations to spice up the tables. On the day of the bake sale, we decided to price them pretty cheaply so that people would be more likely to buy more and we would hopefully raise more money. The day of the bake sale went very smoothly and everything went to plan.

“After break and lunch, we had sold out almost everything we had. We ended up around £380 in just one day.”

Buoyed by this early success, more fundraising was on the cards, this time on the football pitch. A group, including students Logan Lee, Nathan Allan, Jai Clark and Robbie Lawson, wanted to run a football tournament to raise money for the same cause. This was a whole school event from S1-S6 run during the school day.

Each player contributed £1 towards Macmillan and donations were given by spectators. There were around 12 different teams and the year groups were categorised into year groups. The tournament was played during sixth and seventh period in the school day. The total amount raised from the football tournament was roughly around £130.

Carla added: “Margo Stewart from Huntly District Macmillan Cancer Support committee came in to collect the donation which in total was a whopping £510.80 only.

“Margo was very thankful and grateful that we decided to raise money for the charity.”
