Tesco Elgin stocks Christmas food and treats, including Mr Kipling mince pies, in September
Festive food and treats have been spotted on the shelves in a town’s supermarket.
Exactly 100 days away from the big day, Christmas chocolate and mince pies were spotted in Elgin’s Tesco.
Readers of The Northern Scot jumped into conversation about the timing of the festive treats appearing.
A mixed bag saw many people say it was “far too early” to be thinking about December 25, but many saw the benefit.
It will allow families to “spread the cost” of the festive period, Fiona Smith pointed out.
She said: “I don’t understand why people get so annoyed. If you don’t want to buy it now, don’t buy it.
“Some people need to spread the cost and considering there are only three pay days left (for most), then why not have it out and give folk the option.
“It’s really not that big a deal.”
Kelly Strachan agreed with Fiona, adding: “While I agree that this feels early, it enables some families to be able to spread the cost better.
“If it bothers you that much, just don’t buy it!”
However, Darren Watts believes that Christmas Day is losing some of its unique magic due to overcommercialisation.
He said: “Should not be on shelves until December. Christmas has lost its magic because everyone starts preparing for it in the summer. It is ridiculous.
“Christmas songs on the radio in October. What is the point. It is almost a six-month thing now.”
Gordon Wells added: “Far too early. There are only 12 days of Christmas and not one of them is in September, October or November.”
Peter Mitchell said: “Halloween , Bonfire night and then it’s time to get in spirit of things! But not before then! Ridiculous.”
Lorna Whyte, on the other hand, is already counting down the days.
“It’s 14 weeks tomorrow,” she said. “The only problem is that if I buy early I eat the sweets!”
Tesco confirmed that festive goods are stocked early to allow customers to “stock up” and help with “planning and budgeting”.
