Organisers of the Scottish Traditional Boat Festival in Portsoy have secured Harry Potter actor Sean Biggerstaff as guest speaker for its biggest fundraiser of the year.

Star of many acclaimed films, including the magical film series and the Whisky Galore! remake, which was filmed in Portsoy, Biggerstaff will be attending the dinner which takes place on Friday, April 5 in the town’s Station Hotel.

Looking ahead to revisiting Portsoy, where the 2016 remake of Whisky Galore! was largely filmed, he said: “I remember the filming of Whisky Galore! in and around Portsoy as one of the best times of my life, both professionally and personally.

“A huge part of this was how helpful and welcoming the local people were.

“We were there for a little under four weeks and it felt like a whole summer.

“I think the warmth and joy we all felt being there is evident on the screen and is a crucial part of the film.

“I can’t think of a better way to come back and visit than to attend the fundraising dinner for such an important cultural event, and I am absolutely delighted and honoured to have been asked.”

The Scottish Traditional Boat Festival is one of the biggest events of the summer bringing thousands of people to the Banffshire area.

This year’s event will take place on the weekend of June 22 and 23.

It engages the local region, bringing together boats, music, crafts, food and drink to celebrate the area’s maritime and cultural heritage.

Events include competitive skiff racing on the open seas, food demonstrations, craft displays and a range of musical acts.

Sean Biggerstaff’s biggest role to date has been playing Oliver Wood in the Harry Potter film series and he has also appeared in various other films, TV programmes, theatre productions and radio shows.

Festival co-chairman Keith Newton said: “We are delighted that Sean will be attending the dinner and very much look forward to hearing about his interesting and varied career.

“Interest in the dinner has certainly been high since we announced Sean’s presence.

“With thanks to the festival’s many supporters for their generosity, there will also be some great items up for auction on the evening.”

Tickets for the dinner are on sale now priced £30 eac and include a three-course meal and welcome drink.

They are available from Keith Newton by emailing keith@portsoy.org

Proceeds from the dinner go towards funding the operational costs of the festival.
