The Lord-Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire Alexander Manson joined teachers and pupils to plant trees at Uryside School in Inverurie this week as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy initiative to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
Aberdeenshire Council’s Director of Education and Children’s Services Laurence Findlay and the local authority’s Head of Education Vincent Docherty were among the dignitaries present at the planting ceremony which is part a series of events across Aberdeenshire marking this most remarkable milestone of The Queen’s reign, which began in 1952.
The Lord-Lieutenant was joined by head teacher Kim Dodd, teachers, and pupils during the tree planting ceremony on Wednesday, January 12.
Ms Dodd said: “It was a privilege to welcome the Lord-Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire Alexander Manson to our school. The children were really excited about this special event.
“The trees will not only act as a symbol of Her Majesty The Queen’s enduring reign but they will also be useful for outdoor learning and help the environment.”
There are several Green Canopy tree planting ceremonies taking place at schools across Aberdeenshire to mark The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
The focal point of the national celebrations will be over the Platinum Jubilee weekend with an extended Bank Holiday from Thursday June 2 to Sunday 5.
Joining them was local councillor Judy Whyte who had a personal connection to the event.
She said : "It was a real pleasure to join pupils, parents, staff, colleagues and community partners at Uryside School for a ceremony with Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire planting a tree in the school Nursery garden to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee.
"I had the added honour of helping to open a school outdoor classroom which the pupils have kindly chosen to name Mitchell’s Moo Hoose in recognition of the links my family had with Market Place School and the strong local heritage and community spirit that lives on in the fabulous new school setting at Uryside.
"I greatly admired the wooden plaque which was crafted by a very talented parent.
"Anyone who knew my late Dad, Pat, will know how much he’d have loved that.
"It was a very special occasion with the whole school in attendance."
