Up to ten sites across Moray could have a combined total of £850,000 spent upon them to get ready for the expected rise in staycations.

The proposals include sites in Burghead, Portknockie, Craigellachie, Ballindalloch, Cullen, Lossiemouth, Portgordon and Findhorn.

However, discussions are still ongoing with the local communities regarding the exact details.

The exact amount of money is also reliant on various bids for funding.

Shona Morrison, the council's convenor, said: "The work being carried out this year, and the proposals for future phases, show ambition for Moray in improving the visitor experience and firmly establishing Moray as a must-visit destination of Scotland.

"This plan identifies potential support for communities that have faced pressure on the infrastructure due to significant increases in visitor numbers, particularly with the growth in the motorhome sector."

Work expected to be completed by April next year could see either new or improved car parks at Portknockie, Fiddich Park in Craigellachie and at Ballindalloch.

It might also include work at Burghead to improve the access road along the seafront where the old railway line came in to the harbour and station, as well as more signs to point visitors to rules for informal camping and tourist activities.

In addition, it could include the installation of a waste disposal point at the East Beach carpark – although this is currently subject to consultation with the local community.

Work proposed for a later date also includes removing the blind corner at the north west car park in Findhorn and improving the surface of the village's north east car park.

Amongst the other proposals are:

  • Stopover points for 15 camper vans in Cullen.
  • A new car park near Bow Fiddle Rock.
  • An extension to the Ben Rinnes car park
  • Car parking space for 15 more vehicles in Hopeman
  • An upgrade to the toilets at Ballindalloch
