Friend of Scottish DJ Jackmaster walking to Glastonbury in his memory

A man who grew up near Huntly has set himself a gruelling challenge in memory of his famous best friend.

The death of the renowned DJ and record producer Jackmaster at the age of just 38 in October left the music world in shock. But for Joe Coghill, a former Gordon Schools pupil from Insch, the blow was particularly personal as they had been close pals for nearly 20 years.

The pair first bonded as teenagers thanks to a shared love of dance music.

They then went on to travel the world together, DJ-ing at the same gigs in venues such as Ibiza, Australia, New Zealand and China.

Joe, who runs the record label Never Sleep and also promotes events, now aims to walk 200 miles from his home in Kent all the way to the Glastonbury music festival.

He said: “Jack was the one who gave me the confidence to do what I do.

“We first met in Glasgow when I was 19 and we immediately bonded over a shared love of music and clubbing.

“He was such a lovely guy with a brilliant sense of humour – a very genuine and kind person.”

Joe added: “Considering I just turned 40 this past weekend it’s fair to say that we went a long way back together.

“To hear that he’d suddenly died following an accident in Ibiza was just devastating. I’d been speaking to him only nine days before.”

Through his walk Joe aims to raise money for two of the good causes that his friend once supported.

In 2022, Jack completed the Edinburgh Half Marathon, raising funds for We Are With You – an organisation that helps people affected by drugs, alcohol and mental health problems – as well as the charity Endometriosis UK.

Joe added: “Jack was widely recognised as someone who did a lot during his lifetime to promote music and musicians from Scotland.

“What’s less well known though is just how much he quietly did for charity. He even jumped out of a plane once to raise money.

“He was very humble and always went above and beyond for others.

“Through my walk I want to raise money for the same causes that were close to his heart.

“Scotland loved Jack and eventually the world loved him.

“That was evident at his funeral, with people from all over the globe came to say their goodbyes.”
