Tarlair rockfall forces Aberdeenshire Council to close footpath

A popular footpath has been closed after a rockfall took place.

Aberdeenshire Council was alerted to the fallen rock behind Tarlair pavilion earlier on Thursday.

A footpath at Tarlair has been closed following a rockfall.
A footpath at Tarlair has been closed following a rockfall.

A local authority spokesman said: “A large piece of rock fell from the overhanging rockface and crossed the adjacent footpath before hitting the site works fence.

“Thankfully no-one was injured and the fence stopped it from hitting the grade A-listed building which is undergoing refurbishment.

“While this may be an isolated event, the stability of the remaining rock on the hillside is uncertain and for everyone’s safety, the footpath leading from Tarlair up and around the hillside towards Gamrie has been closed until further notice.

“We understand this path is popular, but safety is our priority. The path will therefore remain closed until the hillside can be properly assessed. Thank you for your understanding.”
