An offer to give a friend a lift home almost ended in tragedy for a former Buckie Thistle player whose dangerous driving seriously injured his passenger.

Inverness Sheriff Court was told today that Steven Ross was at a birthday party on February 2, 2019 in the Vodka Revolution bar in Inverness.

Fiscal depute Susan Love said that the 28-year-old agreed to give the friend a lift home to Tain.

But as he came onto the Tore roundabout at excessive speed "for some reason he turned left towards Muir of Ord".

Ms Love added: "A short distance later he lost control, his vehicle overturned and crashed into a fence and trees.

"The car ended up on its roof in a field. Other motorists stopped to assist."

The other man suffered a collapsed lung and a fractured collar bone in the accident.

"He has since made a full recovery," Ms Love told Sheriff Eilidh MacDonald.

Ross, who lives at New Street, Shandwick, admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Sentence was deferred until August 16 for a background report.

Ross signed for Buckie Thistle in 2017.

During his career he also played for Ross County, Elgin City, Forres Mechanics, Brora Rangers and Dumbarton.
