Secretary of the group Janet Anderson, who was one the participants, said: "Our community fundraiser suggested doing the firewalk and it was a remarkable total that was raised. Everyone involved should be congratulated.

"Marie Curie and the Deveron and District fundraising group is very grateful to all who supported the event and in particular the generosity of members from the local community who donated money.

"The work of the Marie Curie nurses will benefit and it allows them to continue to provide care and support to individuals in their own homes. Marie Curie greatly appreciates their support."

The firewalking was carried out by specialist company Blaze whose team guided the brave "soles" through the challenge.

The fundraisers were supported by local groups with Banff Rugby Club the hosts of the event and assisted on the night.

Banff Rotary Club helped with the marshalling and Deveron FM provided the entertainment with music and commentary.

The organisations that supported the event were Macduff Shipyards, The Good Sleep Company, Soy Kilts, Saltire Memorial Company, Iain Scott, Trend DIY, Turriff Fire Station and The Garret.

Marie Curie provides care and support to people with terminal illnesses and their families.

Its nurses provide home care locally and for thousands of people across the UK every year. They also help with practical and emotional support for families and carers.

The charity also has hospices which provide assistance across the country.

It is a leading funder of palliative care research to find better ways of caring for people with terminal illnesses.

The Great Daffodil Appeal is the flagship fundraising campaign of Marie Curie. Companies and individuals sell daffodil pin badges and wear yellow in support.

Its big fundraisers during the year have included the Blooming Great Tea Party and Walk to Remember.
