Christmas spirit helps keep out the cold as crowds flock to Buckie carol service
The bitter cold could not freeze out the warmth of Christmas spirit at a local carol service.
Young and old alike flocked to Cluny Square in Buckie on the evening of Thursday, December 12 for the eagerly awaited third Carols in the Square.
Organised by local award-winning community group Buckie’s Roots, the singing was again led by Buckie Community Choir.
Joining the event for the first time were kids drawn from school choirs in the area.
A total of 18 carols or Christmas songs rang out across the square including such classics as Joy to the World, Away in a Manger and Hark the Herald Angels Sing. There was also an opportunity to enjoy more modern takes on the festive season, such as I Wish It Could be Christmas Every Day and Calypso Carol.
Featuring again at the event were three community Christmas trees of remembrance, each festooned with message baubles. These were on sale to the public prior to the service, with around 600 in all snapped up.
Bringing proceedings to a close before the final song of the evening - appropriately enough White Christmas - was Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Banffshire Tricia Lawson.
Speaking after the service, Buckie’s Roots chairwoman Meg Jamieson said: “What a fantastic community Christmas event!
“The candlelit procession from the Buckie North and Rathven Parish Church to the square is always a fantastic sight and this year it was led by over 100 primary school children who lit the way with light wands.
“As always Buckie Community Choir and the primary schools choirs were supported by Paul T, who provided the music and sound system. For the first time the ASG primary pupils from Portessie, Cluny, St Peter’s and Millbank along with Findochty Primary pupils joined us. Over 100 pupils singing and performing made it such a special event enjoyed by all ages. Hearing the community choir and the children’s choir together was so special, and with the gathered crowd singing and dancing it was a very festive evening.
“Partnership working has always been a priority for Buckie’s Roots and this event was no exception. Joining forces with Buckie Community Choir and Paul T over the years have made this event possible. With the primary schools being involved this year it can only flourish and we will build on this for next year.
“For Buckie’s Roots is the last event of a very busy year.”
