Players of all ages will be able to get back on the field as Ellon Rugby Club's activities make their return.

The squads are organising a Return Of All Rugby (ROAR) festival on Saturday, September 25 and Sunday, September 26.

The activities have been aligned with Scottish Rugby’s return to rugby campaign, Everyone’s Game, to support Scotland’s clubs and societies as the sport moves to restart with the easing of Covid restrictions.

It is hoped that the upcoming event will give more people the chance to enjoy the health and social benefits of rugby and find out more about what the club has to offer.

The activities have been funded with the support of Scottish Rugby, which awarded the club £7500 via its Kick Start grants.

The funding is designed to provide financial assistance to host events and proactive plans to recruit and retain players, coaches, volunteers, match officials, and other staff.

Ellon Rugby Club will be using its grant to update its equipment and host the two community days of rugby activities, catering, raffles and more.

Club chairman Andy Gordon said: “It’s fantastic to have rugby feature again at The Meadows after such a long time away.

"We are looking forward to getting the rugby community back together, socialising, at an appropriate distance, and allowing players to get back doing what they enjoy.”

On Saturday, September 25 the activities will kick-off with a junior festival from 9am-12pm and there will also be a girls and ladies come and try event.

From 1pm to 5pm there will be Matches at the Meadows, which will feature the under 18s v Wanderers; the Second XV v Dyce and First XV v Caithness.

Afterwards the Ladies Rugby World Cup Qualifier Scotland v Ireland will be screened at the Station Hotel in Ellon.

On Sunday from 12.30pm to 2.30pm there will be a Tartan Touch Come and Try event for all ages and abilities.

Also the under 13/14 and 15/16 squads will be playing games against Wanderers from 11am and 1pm.

Ellon Rugby Club's recently appointed development officer, Stuart Corsar, said: “There is already a depth of talent across all age groups in Ellon Rugby and we are excited to be able to showcase these as a full club.

"I am also looking forward to developing the girls and women’s game in my role and our ROAR event provides a great opportunity for current and new players to give rugby a try.”
