Huntly pupils at Gordon Primary School held inside over ‘sword’ false alarm

School staff held children inside at breaktime after a man with a “sword” was spotted nearby, but police found it was a “small plastic sword”.

Pupils at Gordon Primary School in Huntly were later allowed out to play, when officers confirmed that the man was “not regarded as a threat”.

In a letter to parents on Monday evening, Head Teacher Deborah Ewen said children had been held back for half an hour “to ensure everyone’s safety”.

However, Ms Ewen confirmed that officers later told staff the man had “a plastic sword and was regarded as safe”.

A spokesperson for Aberdeenshire Council revealed that reports detailed that a person had been seen near the school “in fancy dress with what appeared to be a sword”.

“The safety and wellbeing of pupils is our top priority and Gordon Primary School kept pupils inside across break time,” the spokesperson added.

“Shortly after, Police Scotland confirmed the man had a small plastic sword and was not regarded as a threat.”

Ms Ewen’s letter to parents added: “The children were safe at all times.”
