The hard work and dedication of Quarriers staff including Siobhan Lawson of the Aberdeenshire carers support service has been recognised as the social care charity marks its 150th anniversary.

MSP for Glasgow Pam Duncan-Glancy inspired a specially-selected group of staff when talking about Disability and Opportunity in 2021 and then followed with presenting Excellence Awards to Quarriers’ staff and volunteers at the William Quarrier Scottish Epilepsy Centre in Govan.

The renowned facility is just part of the legacy of the rags-to-riches shoe merchant who started the charity in James Morrison Street in Glasgow in 1871 as a home for orphaned children.

The ethos of William Quarrier to support those in need continues to this day and social care staff from the charity have been acknowledged as among the unsung heroes during the pandemic.

Their commitment was recognised by the MSP who presented the awards to staff that helped to ensure that Quarriers continues to provide the best possible level of care through its 100 different services across Scotland.

The charity recognised the best from across its 100 services in relation to best newcomer; excellence in volunteering; care and support; supporting front line services; above and beyond during the pandemic; leadership and management; and best team.

Winners came from across Quarriers services including Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen, Glasgow and the Borders.

Siobhan Lawson of the Quarriers Aberdeenshire carers support service received the Excellence in Care and Support accolade.

The award recognises the excellent support she provides to carers as well as her team and her commitment to ensuring she shows respect and understands that each caring role is different and no circumstance is the same.

The charity said she is very much outcome focused as to what the needs are of the carer and how they can work together to put support in place to meet those needs.

It added she is also always willing to take on a challenge and develop her professional knowledge, and has developed presentations on the service as well as working with Alzheimer’s Scotland to help provide a support group for those caring for people with dementia.

Ms Duncan-Glancy said: “Quarriers staff have continually gone above and beyond to provide vital care and support through the provision of key services across Scotland.

"I’m delighted to recognise and celebrate the importance of their work and their dedication as the organisation marks its 150th anniversary.”

Dr Ron Culley, CEO of Quarriers, said: “As we mark our 150th anniversary, we’re delighted to welcome Ms Duncan Glancy MSP to Quarriers.

"The charity has made a significant impact on Scotland’s care sector for the past 150 years. With Ms Duncan Glancy’s support, the positive impact of Quarriers’ alongside the people who need it most, will go from strength to strength.

“For many the support of our staff is vital and it helps them to realise their full potential and overcome challenges in their day to day lives and all our team should be proud of their work and the difference that it makes.”
