The Middleton Trust's annual junior quiz which supports sport clubs in Ellon returned after an absence of two years due to the pandemic.

It was the 10th running of the event and was held in the town's Royal British Legion.

Five clubs were represented with each having two teams competing, apart from Ythan Amateur Swimming Club which had one.

Chairman of the trust Ean Mackie said: "An enjoyable evening was had by all nine teams which competed for the prize money on offer.

"No club left the hall at the end of the event without a cheque towards their funds for all the hard work.

"Although they only had one team, whereas all the other clubs represented had two, the outright winners were the Ythan Amateur Swimming Club who walked away with a cheque for £158, including £50 as winners; Ellon Netball collected £197, including £25 for being second; Ellon Amateur Athletics Club £189, including £10 for being third; Ellon Gordon Cricket Club received £154 and TrYthan, newcomers to the event, went home with £172. In all the trust handed out £870 in total.

"By the end of the evening the trust had handed out approximately £11,000 in total to clubs in the 10 years of the quiz nights."

The Middleton Trust was set up to honour the memory of Alan Middleton to ensure that his contribution and commitment to sport will not be forgotten.

Mr Middleton was a keen and successful sportsman in various fields, and a dedicated coach for local youth groups.

The trust supports the development of sporting talent in the Ellon area by primarily providing grants to people under 18 who have shown promise.
