Ellon RFC has been awarded £1000 and a chance to meet Scotland international stars, after being selected as one of two national winners of the 2022 Royal Bank RugbyForce programme.

The Aberdeenshire-based club came out on top against competition from across the nation, which saw more than 100 entries submitted to the judges.

The club will receive its prize money ahead of Royal Bank RugbyForce Weekend, taking place on Saturday, August 6.

The milestone moment in the grassroots calendar typically consists of rugby clubs welcoming the local community through their doors and hosting a range of events, such as fun-filled taster training sessions for potential new players or volunteer DIY days to get the club ready for the new season.

By securing "Hero Club" status, Ellon RFC will also receive a visit from Scotland internationals on RugbyForce Weekend, including players from either the women’s national XV, the men and women’s sevens teams or notable former legends of the Scottish game.

Royal Bank RugbyForce is a nationwide programme launched by Royal Bank of Scotland in association with Scottish Rugby.

Since launch, more than half a million pounds has been distributed directly benefiting 75 per cent of amateur rugby clubs in Scotland.

Against the backdrop of rising inflation, this year’s funding will contribute vital financial support, helping amateur clubs across Scotland to improve facilities, attract new members and develop sustainable futures.

In 2021, Royal Bank RugbyForce expanded to offer a separate funding and mentoring programme, encouraging grassroots heroes aged 18-35 to apply to become "Young Ambassadors" in a drive to help more young people into amateur club boardrooms.

Each winning candidate receives specialist training and close mentoring to develop the skills needed for effective club management including seminars and events led by Scotland international players.

Andy Gordon, chairman at Ellon Rugby Club said: “The Royal Bank RugbyForce programme is one of its kind for grassroots rugby clubs.

"It is so reassuring for clubs from all corners of Scotland to be given the funding and support needed to strengthen the sustainability of our sport.

"We are looking forward to RugbyForce Weekend, putting on a fun-filled event for our local community and welcoming new faces through the door for a taste of how we do things at Ellon RFC."

Judith Cruickshank, managing director of Royal Bank of Scotland, said: “Ellon RFC are a wonderful asset to their local community and have delivered some vital work in encouraging more local people to enjoy the game of rugby.

"We’re delighted to award them with our top prize and we can’t wait to see what they have in store for their Royal Bank RugbyForce Weekend.

“Supporting grassroots rugby in Scotland is our guiding principle through our sponsorship with Scottish Rugby.

"We’d like to thank them for their continued support as we look forward to another exciting season together.”
