Election 2021: Scottish Liberal Democrats say full steam ahead on reopening railways

The Scottish Liberal Democrats have today said it should be “full steam ahead” on plans to reopen railway lines across Scotland, and Deeside and Peterhead could be among those that gets the green light.
The party's bold plans for new railway lines and stations, and to take a fresh look at those which were lost in the ‘Beeching cuts’ in the 1960s, would be a welcome move for commuters and a boost for travel around Scotland.
A new annual report to Parliament would drive the projects forward.
Candidate for Aberdeenshire West Rosemary Bruce said: “After we put the wheels in motion for the reopening of the Borders railway - which has been a real success - the Scottish Liberal Democrats believe it has to be full steam ahead on making our rail network the best it possibly can be.
"By carrying out a review of which lines would be viable and then getting them up and running we can deliver a real benefit to communities and the environment.
"We need to clean up our air and drive down Scotland's stubbornly high transport emissions.
"Our proposal for a new annual report to Parliament on progress would ensure that this isn't just a topic that comes up when parties want your vote.
“Scottish Liberal Democrats will put recovery first for our communities, jobs and the climate emergency.
"With your support we can have that needle-sharp focus over the next five years, not distractions and a return to the old arguments."
