Last week saw Deputy Lieutenant Major Grenville Irvine-Fortescue visit locals Denis and Hazel Ingram to offer many congratulations and present them with a card from Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant for Aberdeenshire on the occasion of their Diamond Wedding Anniversary at their home in Inverurie.

Councillor Neil Baille also visited to offer congratulations on behalf of the Provost and Aberdeenshire Council.

Denis, born in Oldmeldrum and Hazel, born in Insch first met at a local dance when in their mid teens.

Denis, the youngest of nine (six brothers and three sisters), was working at the Great North of Scotland Railway 'Loco' Works in Inverurie.

Their courtship was interrupted by Denis being called up for National Service in 1959.

He underwent his training at Fort George, near Inverness and then was posted to the 1st Battalion The Seaforth Highlanders who at that time were based at Munster in the then West Germany.

He served his two years with the battalion's Pioneer Platoon and after being de-mobbed, returned to Inverurie and back to working for the 'Loco' Works until the mid 60s when he was made redundant when the works closed.

Denis and Hazel married shortly after he had completed his National Service on July 27, 1962.

He subsequently worked for Lawsons of Dyce for a while before moving to Alexander & Sons as a coach builder in Aberdeen.

He worked for the company for 24 years before returning to Inverurie, where he worked as a Taxi Driver for a couple of years and then for the local Council in the lead up to his retirement.

Hazel was equally busy and worked for 23 years for the Council Environmental Health Department before retiring.

They have two daughters, Fiona and Linda, who arranged this special celebration and they gathered for a celebratory dinner with family and friends at the Ardennan Hotel, Inverurie.

This was a hugely enjoyable and very happy visit and a lovely surprise for Denis and Hazel.
