DIAGEO has begun consultations to cut up to 22 of the 550 staff who work in its malt distilling operations.

Up to half of the jobs affected could be in Moray.

A spokesperson for the drinks giant said: "We continually review all aspects of our operations to ensure we are set up in the most agile and efficient way.

"We have been sharing a new, more flexible operating model proposal with our distillery employees which could mean the removal of 22 roles from the current 550 roles across our malt distilling footprint.

"As a result, we have now commenced a consultation process with our people and their representatives."

Moray Conservative MP Douglas Ross said Diageo employees faced a "worrying" time.

He was given an update from Diageo on the situation last night.

Mr Ross said: "This will be a very worrying time for staff at Diageo – particularly as we approach the festive season.

"Up to half of the jobs affected could be here in Moray.

"I have been updated by Diageo on the current situation and my understanding is that consultation with staff and trade union representatives is just beginning.

"I will be keeping abreast of any developments and will continue to engage with Diageo throughout this process."
