Speaking at her daily briefing, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: "I warmly welcome the news that Pfizer vaccine has been approved - this is not unexpected but the best news we have heard since the pandemic started, but we cannot and must not ease up.

"I am not the only one who feels a lightness of heart that I haven't felt in a long time.

"We expect vaccines to arrive in the coming days and I can confirm that if so the fist will be administer starting on Tuesday, December 8.

"You can understand why I have smiled more today than in several months.

"We will follow advice on the programme to prioritise those with greatest clinical need.

"Conditions mean that transport of the vaccine can be difficult so we are working on how to manage this, but the high probability of the start of vaccination is welcomed.

"The end is now in sight and should motivate us to do all we can between now and then to keep each other safe.

"While cases are reducing, the virus is still dangerous and we must keep doing all we can to keep levels dropping.
