John Crawley, who was previously a member of Ellon Academy’s parent council, is aiming to become the second Scottish Conservative representative in the town and surrounding area alongside popular councillor, Gillian Owen.

The by-election was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic however, Aberdeenshire Council have now scheduled it for next month.

Mr Crawley, who joined the Royal Navy in 1975, has lived in Ellon for nearly 15 years and runs a businesses cleaning the outside of buildings.

The 62-year-old has been involved in several campaigns throughout the town including the new Meikillmill footbridge.

Mr Crawley is determined to see projects such as a new health centre become a reality as well as backing calls for a path linking homes in the north of Ellon to the wider town centre via Caroline’s Wells Wood.

He said: “I’m delighted to stand for Ellon in the by-election next month.

“I’ve lived in Ellon for nearly 15 years and raised my children here who attended Meiklemill Primary and Ellon Academy.

“I know the issues that matter to local people because they matter to me too.

"I love living here and I am standing to represent Ellon and district because I want to make sure our area continues to be a great place to live, work and raise a family.

“Over the next few weeks, I will be out supporting our community and working hard to make myself as accessible as possible to talk with residents about the issues we are facing - please don’t hesitate to get in touch.”

His nomination has been supported by local Conservative councillor Gillian Owen who said: “I'm delighted John Crawley has been selected to contest the Ellon and District by-election for the Scottish Conservatives.

“If elected, he will be a valuable asset to the area and will help me to fight on the issues that matter to residents.”

Scottish Conservative group leader Andy Kille, who is due to become Aberdeenshire Council leader in November, added: “John’s understanding of what matters to people in Ellon and the surrounding area makes him the ideal candidate for the upcoming by-election.

“He’s already involved in a number of community activities and alongside Gillian Owen, he is determined to continue making the area heard.”
