Well known in the local community, Dorothy works with several local youth organisations including the Beavers, The Bothie, The Kids Club, and Messy Church.

She also helps adults in the community is a member of the Pastoral Care Group and is an Elder of Kintore Church.

Her involvement with the youngsters lead to a raft of nominations for the award with many complimenting her on her friendly approachability and her commitment to helping both themselves and the groups they attend.

In normal circumstances the presentation of the award would take place at the end of Rotary year meeting in June when the new club president takes up office, with the presentation made by the previous year's recipient.

Following the sad death of last year's winner Fiona Cooper in October and lockdown leading to face to face meetings being firmly off the agenda, a different approach was taken.

Instead, Rotarians like their counterparts in groups across the north-east have been holding regular meetings via Zoom.

A spokesman for the club said: "We spilled the beans at our Zoom meeting so she really is an online celebrity.

"It was wonderful for us as the Rotary Club of Kintore, Kemnay and District to be able to present the award to Dorothy.

"Even better for us is that her husband David is one of our Rotary members and was able to walk a few hundred yards to pick up the award for her once it was announced an one of our members was able to walk a few hundred yards to photograph the hand over.

"The culmination was that we were able to watch the presentation to Dorothy at our Zoom meeting which happened to be on the subject of Rotary connects the World but in this case Rotary connects Garioch."

"Our congratulations go to Dorothy from all of us."

On her title Dorothy said: "I was gobsmacked to say the least to be chosen.

"I do what I do because I enjoy it and my thanks go to those who nominated me."

Husband David, who handed over the award said: "Dorothy has been working with youngsters for many years and this is testament to her commitment to the community.

"It was an honour to hand over the award this year."
