Charolais bull takes top honours at Thainstone

A top price of 8500gns was achieved at Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ annual multi-breed show and sale of pedigree bulls held alongside the Royal Northern Spring Show at Thainstone yesterday.

The show and sale, sponsored by Campbell Dallas, met a 66 per cent clearance as the 48 bulls cashed in to average £4107.

Sale leader at 8500gns was Islavale Jester 18 from the Stronach family’s well-known herd at Berryleys, Grange, Keith.

Bred out of the heifer Islavale Eleanor, this 23-month-old bull is by Ranfurly Confederate, a sire which has bred bulls to 24,000gns.

He sold to Ross-shire with Gill and Co, Brucefield, Portmahomack.

Regular consignors Graham and Mark Leggat, Mormond Prop, New Pitsligo, sold three Charolais for 6800gns, 5500gns and 5000gns.

Dearest was the Charolais and overall champion Bonnykelly Officer tapped out by judge Ian Goldie, Greenfield, Cummertrees, Annan.

Selling to Peter Junor, Ballaggan, Dores, Inverness, he is a June, 2018-born son of Gretnahouse Ivory, the same sire which bred last year’s champion at 9500gns.

Two other sons of Gretnahouse Ivory sold through the ring including July, 2018-born Bonnykelly Oliver, at 5500gns to Messrs MacIvor, Newlands of Geise, Janetstown, Thurso, and May, 2018-born Bonnykelly Orlando, at 5000gns, to Kenny Smith, Bogentassie, Lumphanan, Banchory.

Colin Stuart and family from Lettoch and Belnoe, Glenlivet, sold the second top price bull at 6200gns for Lettoch Oxford.

This 20-month-old Charolais bull is by the 11,000gns Balthayock Imperial and sold to Sandy Anderson, Nether Tillygarmond, Banchory.

Another similarly bred Charolais from the same home, this time Lettoch Oscar, made 6000gns to Alan Mcarthur, Cretlevane, Balfron, Glasgow.

The champion Simmental from Billy and Anne MacPherson, Blackford, Croy, made 5800gns when knocked down to G Ramsay and Son, Boghead, Auchindoun, Keith.

This was Blackford Jaguar, a 23-month-old son of the noted Blackford Galaxy.

Selling for 5200gns was Aileen Ritchie’s reserve champion Limousin, Ritchies Outrunner from Tamala, Whitecairns.

He is by Ampertaine Elgin and sold to WN Lindsay, Cairnleith, Kirriemuir.

Three other Limousin bulls sold for 5000gns including Elrick Ozzy from Mike Massie, Mains of Elrick, which sold to C and G Thomson, Upper Tillenhilt, Midmar; Shannas Online from John and Margaret Penny, to Kenny Morrison, Haddoch, Huntly; and the Limousin champion Kair Oxford, from Graham Anderson, Mains of Kair, Fordoun, to Sandy Morrison, Bush of Muldearie, Keith.

Other prize winners included the reserve Charolais champion, Alsnow Oak, from Neil and Mark Wattie, Mains of Tonley, Alford, which was unsold, and the reserve Simmental champion, Tillyeve Jason 18, from the Bruce family, Udny, Ellon, which sold for 4800gns to E Norburn, Cruithnii, Tofts, Freswick.

The Aberdeen-Angus championship was awarded to Logie Bonanza from AJR Farms, Milton of Collieston, Ellon, which made 2500gns to Oosterhof and Co, Corsekelly Farm, St Combs, Fraserburgh.

Reserve Aberdeen-Angus champion was Foggie Espen U232 from Karl Scott, Foggie Farm, South Brownhill, Turriff, which was unsold.

Top price Aberdeen-Angus bull was sold to 4200gns from Alexander Norrie, Wrae Farm, Turriff, when purchased by A and C Watson, Glasslaw, Dunnottar.

A Salers bull named Rigel Nike from Rigel Pedigree, Levenfields, Middleton on Leven, Yarm, stood any other breed champion and made 4200gns to Liam Muir, Upper Onston, Stenness, Stromness, while Grant Stephen’s reserve any other breed, a Beef Shorthorn named Glendual Major, was unsold.

Meanwhile, a Hereford bull named Glenlivet Hiccup from Molly Stuart, Lettoch, Glenlivet, sold for 3800gns to Messrs Duncan, Inchsford.
